Aims and Objectives

Upon completion of the course, students will have:

  • Read a series of key texts by and about Indigenous peoples of the Andes, particularly Peru
  • Learned how those texts construct specific images of Indigeneity over time
  • Been introduced to a broad historical account of conquest, resistance, and survival in Peru
  • Considered theoretical issues about the construction and reconstruction of identity
  • Discussed the role of literacy and letrados in the constitution and negotiation of Indigeneity
  • Seen material artefacts of historical and contemporary Indigeneity in Cusco and the Sacred Valley
  • Experienced various modes of interaction, celebration, and consumption of Indigeneity
  • Reflected on their own positions as travellers and tourists to a place of such symbolic weight
